1. At Least 42 Are Dead and Thousands Are Displaced After Flooding in Haiti
At least 42 people were dead and thousands were displaced after a weekend of heavy rainfall and widespread flooding in Haiti, the country’s disaster response agency said Monday. The heavy rain, which fell mostly Saturday and Sunday, flooded more than 13,000 homes, displacing people across Haiti, according to the agency. It also said that 85 people were injured and 11 were missing. Emergency workers rushed to provide food, drinking water and shelter for those who were affected. Western portions of the Caribbean nation appeared to have suffered the brunt: More than 5,000 homes had been affected by rain and flooding, leaving more than 2,500 people displaced, the agency said.

On Saturday, 63 students and staff members at Kabod Aab School — an elementary school for girls in the northern Sar-i-Pul province — became sick shortly after arriving in their classrooms that morning, officials and parents said. The following day, 26 more students along with staff members at the nearby Faiz Abad Girls’ School became ill. Restrictions on education have become a flashpoint since the Taliban seized power in 2021.
